The first human genome sequence was mapped in 2001. In 2022, an international group of scientists called the Telomere-to-Telomere Consortium announced that they were able to finally fill in the gaps of the human genome. Unlike most other chromosomes, the Y is made up of palindromes, or sequences that are the same forward and backward. These palindromes are long too — roughly more than a million base pairs.
