Afghan fund stuck in catharsis amid dire humanitarian crisisgenevasolutions.news5 July 2023 (LINK)

— Nearly a year after it was established, the operation of a Geneva-registered fund appears frozen in time waiting for political conditions to shift so that billions of dollars may be returned to Afghanistan's central bank. In June, Ocha revised down its annual budget for Afghanistan from $4.6 billion to $3.2bn due to the restrictions on female workers. For many, the issue at stake is the fate of the $3.5bn Afghan Fund, established in September and managed by four trustees to enable the recapitalisation of the DAB. Officially called the Fund for the Afghan People, its statutes define its purpose as to "receive, protect, disburse assets for the benefit of the Afghan people, including for foreign exchange rate and price stabilisation objectives in Afghanistan". On 26 June, as the fund met for the third time according to one board member.

After Taliban bans opium, a guilt-racked commander winks at harvestwww.washingtonpost ●25 June 2023 (LINK)

— Since seizing power again in 2021, Taliban leaders pledged once more to strictly crack down on narcotics production and trade. The move was interpreted by analysts as an attempt by the diplomatically isolated group to burnish its image as a responsible government. Since April, the start of the first harvest season since the ban was announced last year, eradication teams that have been deployed almost daily across the country have razed about 4,000 hectares (10,000 acres) of poppy fields.

That amounts to scant progress. In November, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimated that 233,000 hectares (575,000 acres) of opium were being cultivated in 2022, up 32 percent from a year prior. Opium sales generated $1.4 billion for Afghan farmers last year, worth nearly 30 percent of overall agricultural output, the U.N. agency calculated.

She said the officials sought to stress things that they say they have done and not gotten recognition for — and what they called their effort to create an environment that protects women. "Their definition of protection would be, I would say, ours of oppression," Mohammed said.
